The National Championship of Icelandic Women's Choirs will be held June 11-13 in Reykjanesbær.

The Suðurnesja Women's Choir is hosting the tournament this time, which is the 12th national competition of Gígjan, the national association of Icelandic women's choirs. The competitions have been held around the country every 3 years, and this is the second time that the Suðurnesja women have hosted the tournament.

About 330 female choir members from all parts of the country will come together for singing, joy, and concerts.

The 12 choirs will perform their own program at a concert on June 12th at Hljómahöll. The following choirs will perform:

  •  The Senjórítur Women's Choir
  •  Heklurnar Women's Choir
  •  Ísafjörður Women's Choir
  •  Hornafjörður Women's Choir
  •  Ymur Women's Choir
  •  Reykjavik Light Infantry
  •  Akureyri Women's Choir
  •  The Hrynjandi Women's Choir
  •  Reykjavik Women's Choir
  •  Hafnarfjörður Women's Choir
  •  The Women's Choir Ljósbrá
  •  Suðurnes Women's Choir

The second concert is on June 13th at Stapaskóli and is entitled "Fire Goddesses", which is the theme of the concert and was chosen in connection with the volcanic eruptions that have occurred in Reykjanes in recent years.

At this concert, the choirs will unite and perform the results of their joint rehearsals.

The group will then be divided into 5 workshops that have practiced together a program from 5 workshop directors. The directors of these groups are Ágota Joó, Arnór B. Vilbergsson, Dagný Þ. Jónsdóttir, Gísli Magna and Rafn Hlíðkvist.

The song selection is very diverse, including well-known Icelandic songs, film music and gospel.

The highlight of the concert is then when the entire group unites in the premiere performance of the competition song. It is traditional that a special competition song is written for each national competition and is related to the area in which the competition is held. This time the songwriter is the nationally known and admired Suðurnesja member Magnús Þór Sigmundsson. The song is written with lyrics by Rutar Gunnarsdóttir, a former chorister of the Suðurnesja Women's Choir, who passed away in 2006, and the lyrics are related to the theme of the concert.
